Getting There & Away
Road
Although there is an extensive road network throughout Sri Lanka, many of the roads are quite old and in poor condition. However, there is a main highway linking Galle to Colombo. The main options by road from Colombo to Galle are either big, slow public buses or private, express minivans. It normally takes a little under three hours by minivan, and a bit over three hours by bus. The minivans don't leave until they are completely full, and they can end up being extremely cramped. You will also normally have to pay for an extra ticket for luggage, which is about Rs130 per person.
Rail
The comprehensive Sri Lankan rail network links Colombo to Galle. The services are run by Sri Lanka Railways, and reservations made the day before travel are essential. The trains from Colombo leave from Fort Railway Station, which also features a tourist office. They arrive in Galle at the train station, which is situated next to the bus station and roughly a ten minute walk from the fort. Most of the trains to Colombo leave early in the morning.

Getting Around
Bus
Although buses are cheap, this is probably the only thing they have going for them. The combination of heat, overcrowding and the drivers' often reckless disregard for safety make them a nightmare for most visitors. If you do choose to travel by bus, you are able to buy tickets on board from the conductor. Bus can be a very budget option for getting from Galle to Unawatuna. Catch a bus heading east, in the rough direction of Matara. The costs is about Rs10, but be sure to ask the driver if they stop on the way.
Tuk Tuks/Auto Rickshaws
Tuk tuks are probably the best way of getting around the Southern Coast. Although they are reasonably slow, they do allow the chance to take photos along the way. Be sure to bargain with the drivers before getting in. You should have no problem finding tuk tuks wherever you are, as more often than not they'll find you.
