Adam's Peak is the highest point in Sri Lanka, with a peak of 2,243 metres. The mountain has various meanings, but is sacred to all the religions of Sri Lanka.

Buddhists believe that Lord Buddha actually placed his foot on the peak of the mountain whilst visiting Sri Lanka for his 3rd time; Christians believe that the footprint is that of St. Thomas; Hindus the footprint of the god Siva; and Muslims believe it to be that of Adam (which led to the name Adam's Peak).

An annual pilgrimage takes place around April each year during Sri Lanka’s dry season. People taking part in this usually get to the peak before dawn to watch the breath taking sunrise from the top of the mountain.

For visitors, you can start this pilgrimage from different points, including through Hatton town and the Ratnapura District.
