The Southern Coast of Sri Lanka is a region that has successive colonisers, with initially the Portuguese, then Dutch, and finally British all staking claim to the region. With a number of important ports, the Southern Coast was traditionally an important strategic region, and Galle was the administrative centre for centuries.
Much of the colonial architecture still survives in the Southern Coast cities, which successfully recreates a bygone era!

Unfortunately, the Southern Coast of Sri Lanka was devastated by the Boxing Day tsunami that struck in 2004. Many of the coastal cities and towns were badly damaged by the waters, and many people lost their homes, businesses and lives in the disaster. As such, the infrastructure in many of these places is still getting back on its feet. This should not prevent you from visiting, as tourist dollars are sorely needed to get the region back up on its feet.
