The Southern Coast of Sri Lanka is a region that has successive colonisers, with initially the Portuguese, then Dutch, and finally British all staking claim to the region. With a number of important ports, the Southern Coast was traditionally an important strategic region, and Galle was the administrative centre for centuries.

Galle is the largest city on the Southern Coast, and is the main transport hub for the region. It also has the best colonial Dutch architecture, and as such is an interesting place to explore. A highlight is the Dutch fort. Matara is another city with colonial buildings and a fort, and is the southern most city in Sri Lanka. There are a number of interesting temples to visit in the region as well, including Kelaniya Temple, which was believed to have been visited by Buddha. The main attraction of the Southern Coast, however, is the plethora of stunning, white sand beaches which dot the coastline. From Negombo, in the north, down past Wadduwa, Kalutara and Beruwala to Bentota, they are perfect for snorkelling, swimming, or simply lazing around. Many of them are quiet, secluded places, allowing a measure of privacy. A few of the more popular ones feature beachside bars and restaurants.
Unfortunately, the Southern Coast of Sri Lanka was devastated by the Boxing Day tsunami that struck in 2004. Many of the coastal cities and towns were badly damaged by the waters, and many people lost their homes, businesses and lives in the disaster. As such, the infrastructure in many of these places is still getting back on its feet. This should not prevent you from visiting, as tourist dollars are sorely needed to get the region back up on its feet.
